In its 2017 re-evaluation, EFSA derived a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 30 mg/kg body weight per day (as glutamic acid) for glutamic acid and glutamates (E620-625), and found that dietary exposure exceeded not only this ADI but also doses associated with adverse effects in humans for some population groups.
Europe's food-safety authority says these MSG-family flavour enhancers are not genotoxic, but it set a daily limit (30 mg/kg body weight) and warned that some people already take in more than that limit from food additives.
