Herbicide residue

Glyphosate

Also known as: N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, Roundup (active ingredient), glyphosate-based herbicide, CAS 1071-83-6

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup and other broad-spectrum weedkillers, widely used on crops such as oats, wheat, and soy. As a pre-harvest desiccant it can leave residues that carry through into oat-based cereals, breakfast bars, and other grain foods.

ContestedWarning

After a systematic review and evaluation of the scientific evidence, the Monograph Working Group classified glyphosate as 'probably carcinogenic to humans' (Group 2A).

IARC (WHO) classified glyphosate as Group 2A, probably carcinogenic to humans, based on limited evidence in humans, sufficient evidence in animals, and strong evidence of genotoxicity.

Exhibit 03
Caution

Glyphosate was detected in all 28 oat-based cereal and breakfast products sampled... all but two containing glyphosate levels above EWG's health benchmark of 160 parts per billion; the highest levels - almost 18 times greater than the benchmark - were found in Quaker Oatmeal Squares cereal.

EWG-commissioned lab testing found glyphosate in all 28 oat-based products sampled, with all but two above EWG's 160 ppb children's health benchmark; Quaker Oatmeal Squares reached 2,837 ppb, nearly 18 times the benchmark.
