The U.S. FDA reports sulfites can provoke severe, even life-threatening, allergic-type and asthmatic reactions in sulfite-sensitive people; in 1986 the FDA prohibited sulfites used to maintain color and crispness on fruits and vegetables intended to be eaten raw, and requires sulfiting agents to be declared on labels at 10 ppm or higher.
